The Melbourne curriculum – explained

At Melbourne, we want our students to create their own path, with the power to choose their own direction and explore new options along the way.

Since 2008, the University of Melbourne has undertaken an ambitious mission to transform higher education in Australia through our philosophy that a diversity of perspectives provides a more intense education experience, helping build critical, analytical and adaptive capabilities in graduates.

The Melbourne curriculum is distinct in Australia but aligned with leading universities in Europe and North America. Our curriculum combines a broad-based undergraduate experience with pathways to postgraduate education, employment or research. Through this unique approach, students are encouraged to explore and discover their passions and strengths while developing deep expertise in their chosen discipline.

But why does this matter? And why should it matter to you?

Economic, technological, social, and climatic change is accelerating, making the world we are educating our graduates for unpredictable. Graduates entering the workforce need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to respond to current demands while also having an adaptable mindset to approach new challenges with creativity and innovation.

University of Melbourne Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Global and Engagement, Michael Wesley says, “The Melbourne curriculum ensures our students are ready to enter the workforce as highly capable graduates, uniquely positioned to support future and growing careers.”

“Now, more than ever, as the nature of work changes, our students can change with it.”

Preparing students for the future all stems from a curriculum that empowers them to direct their own learning experience and take advantage of a diversity of perspectives.

Choosing from seven bachelors degrees in arts, biomedicine, commerce, design, fine arts, music, or science, students can select from over 100 study areas as they progress.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Gregor Kennedy says, “If students have a career in mind, they can structure their degree from day one to gain the knowledge and skills they need. But if they want to explore their options or pursue other interests, the curriculum provides them with flexibility in their studies, giving them time to make these decisions along the way.”

“Importantly, students can design a unique course experience that suits them.”

Exposing students to different disciplines directly translates into an ability to understand the complexity of real-world problems faced in the economy and society. Through the curriculum our graduates develop critical, analytical and adaptable capabilities that are sought after by employers. These capabilities are honed through hands-on, practical and industry-based learning experiences, as well as through global experiences, and exchange and study abroad programs from over 200 partners.

The Melbourne curriculum also equips our undergraduate students with the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions about undertaking a professional postgraduate degree. As students progress in their undergraduate studies, they can choose pathways that align with postgraduate study options that set them up for their future career – such as nursing, architecture, teaching or engineering. There are over 200 specialised professional graduate degrees to choose from, which enable students to gain a higher qualification so that they’re exceptionally well equipped to make an impact in their chosen profession on a global scale.

At Melbourne, we want our students to create their own path, with the power to choose their own direction and explore new options along the way. This is important in a world where careers are changing fast and new opportunities are emerging every day.

We are not just preparing students for when they graduate; we’re setting them up to succeed over the entire course of their careers.
